Most orders start the same way: someone reads a number off a brake chamber, types it into a search box, and lands on a page that says which part replaces it. That works, and it is why our cross-reference tool exists across 496 numbers from 52 manufacturers.
It also hides a step that costs money when it is skipped.
The number belongs to the chamber
A number stamped on a brake chamber is the chamber's number. The diaphragm is one component inside it, and manufacturers do not always give the diaphragm a separate public number. So a cross-reference table is answering a slightly different question than the one you asked: not "which diaphragm is this" but "which diaphragm goes in the assembly this number identifies".
Nearly always those are the same answer. The exceptions are what matter:
- A chamber that has been rebuilt before. If someone previously fitted a different service kit, the number on the housing no longer describes what is inside.
- A number that was superseded. Manufacturers replace numbers, and a superseded number can point to an assembly with a different internal spec than the one you have in your hand.
- A number read off the wrong part. On a spring brake chamber there are two sections and two sets of markings.
Type and stroke are the decision
Two facts identify a diaphragm, and both are readable without any catalogue:
Type is the effective area in square inches, marked on the chamber body — Type 20, Type 24, Type 30. It is the figure the whole industry sizes by.
Stroke is normal or long. A long-stroke chamber uses a deeper diaphragm with more travel. The two are not interchangeable, and this is the mistake we see most: the Type is right, the stroke is not, and the part either will not seat or will not deliver full travel.
If you have Type and stroke, you can order without a cross-reference at all — that is what the size chart is for. If you only have a number, use the cross-reference to get to a Type and stroke, then verify those two against the chamber.
The order to check in
- Read the Type off the chamber body.
- Establish normal or long stroke. Our guide on telling them apart covers the physical differences.
- Then use the OEM number, to confirm what you already concluded rather than to replace the conclusion.
Doing it in that order turns the cross-reference into a check instead of a guess. Doing it in the opposite order works most of the time, which is exactly what makes it risky — the failure is rare enough to be surprising and expensive enough to matter.
Where our own data comes from, and its limits
The vehicle application lists on our product pages come from published aftermarket catalogues, named on each page. They are real, sourced data, and they are not the vehicle manufacturer's own fitment records. We say so on the page rather than presenting them as something stronger.
That is also why every page asks you to confirm the marking on your chamber. It is not boilerplate. It is the one check that cannot be done from our side.
