Air Brake Chamber Diaphragm
The diaphragm is the single wearing component inside a service brake chamber. It converts air pressure into the mechanical force that applies the brake, and it does so on every brake application, throughout its service life while sealing against pressure, temperature swings and road contamination. When it fails, the chamber loses pressure and braking force drops — which is why it is one of the highest-turnover replacement items in a heavy vehicle parts inventory.
Choosing the right diaphragm
Two figures identify the part you need. The first is the Type — the effective area of the diaphragm in square inches, marked on the brake chamber body (Type 9, Type 12, Type 16, Type 20, Type 24, Type 30 and so on). The second is the stroke: normal stroke chambers use a flatter diaphragm, long stroke chambers a deeper one with more travel. The two are not interchangeable. If you have the OEM number stamped on the chamber, the cross-reference tool will resolve it directly.
