How does this part work?
The diaphragm sits between the two halves of the service brake chamber. When the driver applies the brake, compressed air fills the chamber on one side of the diaphragm; the diaphragm deflects and drives the push rod out, which rotates the slack adjuster and applies the foundation brake. Releasing the pedal vents the air and the return spring pushes the diaphragm back. A Type 27 diaphragm presents 27 square inches of effective area to that air pressure, which is what determines the output force of the chamber.
