Three different things arrive in our inbox under the same request: "I need a brake diaphragm." Sometimes the buyer means the rubber part. Sometimes they mean a service kit. Sometimes they have a chamber that should be replaced whole. The three have different prices and different part numbers, and ordering the wrong one costs a shipment.
Here is how to tell them apart before you send the enquiry.
The diaphragm
The flexing rubber component inside a service brake chamber. Fabric-reinforced rubber, clamped between the two halves of the housing. Air pressure on one side pushes it, the push rod moves, the brake applies. It is the only part of a service brake chamber that is designed to wear out, and it is what we supply — Type 9 to Type 36, normal and long stroke.
If the chamber housing is sound and the leak is at the clamp line or through the rubber, this is the part you need.
The repair kit
The diaphragm plus the surrounding consumables: seals, the clamp ring in some designs, sometimes a return spring or fasteners. Kits are assembled per chamber model, which is why a kit number rarely cross-references cleanly to a diaphragm number.
A kit makes sense when the chamber has been in service long enough that you would rather replace everything soft while it is open. It costs more, and most of the extra content is parts that were not what failed.
The complete chamber
The whole assembly — housing, diaphragm, push rod, mounting studs. You want this when the housing itself is the problem: corrosion through the metal, a distorted flange that will not seal, damaged mounting threads, or a bent push rod.
A new diaphragm in a corroded housing leaks again. This is the case where the cheaper part is the wrong answer.
Which one do you have?
Work from the symptom, not from the price list:

The one you must not open
A spring brake chamber — the section that applies the parking and emergency brake — contains a large compressed power spring. That spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious or fatal injury if the housing is opened without the correct caging procedure and tooling.
Do not dismantle a spring brake chamber to inspect or replace anything inside it. If the fault is in that section, the assembly is replaced as a unit by a qualified workshop. Nothing in this article applies to it.
The service section of a combined chamber is a different matter, and that is where the diaphragms we supply are fitted.
What to send us
Whatever you conclude, the enquiry only needs three things:
- Type — the effective area marked on the chamber body.
- Stroke — normal or long.
- Quantity.
An OEM number helps and is not required. If you send one, we will tell you what it resolves to — and if it resolves to a kit or a complete chamber rather than a diaphragm, we will say so rather than shipping the nearest thing. What a number does and does not establish is its own subject.
