How to Replace an Air Brake Chamber Diaphragm
This is an overview of replacing a service brake chamber diaphragm. It is not a substitute for the vehicle manufacturer’s service manual, and it does not cover spring brake chambers, which must not be dismantled.

Never dismantle a spring brake chamber
A spring brake chamber — the parking and emergency brake unit, recognisable as a second, larger section bolted behind the service chamber — contains a power spring held under extreme compression. Releasing that spring without the correct caging procedure and equipment can kill or cause life-changing injury. Chambers have been known to separate with enough force to penetrate a workshop wall.
If the unit you are working on has two sections, or has a caging bolt fitted or a port for one in the end cap, stop. That work belongs in a qualified workshop with the correct tools, and in many jurisdictions the spring section is supplied as a sealed, non-serviceable assembly for exactly this reason.
Everything below applies to the service brake chamber only. Brake work is safety-critical: if you are not competent to carry it out and to verify it afterwards, it should be done by someone who is.
Which chamber are you working on?
Establish this before touching anything. A single-section chamber is a service brake chamber. A chamber with a second, larger section behind it contains a power spring and must not be dismantled outside a qualified workshop.
The service chamber is the part that applies the brake when the driver presses the pedal. On many axles it is the only chamber fitted, and it is a straightforward assembly: two shells, a clamp band, a diaphragm, a push rod and a return spring.
A spring brake chamber adds a second section containing the power spring that applies the parking and emergency brake. Visually it is longer, and the end cap usually carries either a caging bolt or a sealed port for one. That section stores a great deal of energy whether or not the vehicle has air in it.
If there is any doubt about which you are looking at, the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation for that axle settles it. Do not resolve the question by dismantling.
What does a marking like 30/30 mean?
Two Types, not one. The first number is the service chamber, the second the spring chamber. A 30/30 is a Type 30 service section with a Type 30 spring section behind it — a spring brake chamber.
North American practice writes a combination chamber as two numbers: 24/24, 24/30, 30/30, 30/36. The first is the Type of the service section, the second the Type of the spring section, and the two are frequently different. A chamber marked with a single number is a service chamber only.
For ordering, only the first number matters to us. The diaphragm we supply is the service diaphragm, so what gets asked for as a 30/30 brake chamber diaphragm is a Type 30 service diaphragm — the same part as a plain Type 30 chamber, in the stroke that chamber uses. The spring section is not something we supply a part for, and not something you should open.
"Double diaphragm" describes the same class of chamber from the other side: a combination chamber whose spring section uses a diaphragm rather than a piston. The word diaphragm in that name refers to the spring section, not to the service part — which is exactly why the term misleads. A double diaphragm brake chamber is a spring brake chamber, and the warning above applies to it in full.
Two numbers on the housing means a spring brake chamber. Order against the first number; do not open the section behind it.
What has to happen before anything is dismantled?
The vehicle must be secured so it cannot move without the brakes, and the air system must be fully drained. A chamber under pressure will separate violently when the clamp band is released.
Park on level ground, chock the wheels mechanically, and do not rely on the parking brake to hold the vehicle while you are working on the brakes. Drain the air system completely and confirm it has drained rather than assuming it.
Work on one wheel end at a time so there is always an intact reference on the vehicle, and note the orientation of the chamber, the clamp band and the air line before anything comes apart. Reassembly errors are much easier to prevent than to diagnose.
Have the replacement diaphragm confirmed as correct before you start — by Type, by stroke, and against the number stamped on the chamber. Discovering a mismatch with the brake in pieces is an avoidable problem.
How is the service chamber opened?
By releasing the clamp band that holds the two housings together, once the system is drained. Mark the relative position of the housings first so the chamber goes back together in the same orientation.
The two shells are held together by a clamp band around their mating flanges, with the diaphragm’s sealing bead trapped between them. With the system drained, releasing the band separates the housings.
Even with the system drained, treat the separation with respect: the return spring is still there, and residual pressure is a real possibility if the drain was incomplete. Keep yourself out of the line the housings would take if they parted suddenly.
Once open, the diaphragm lifts out. Note which way round it sat — the convolution faces a particular direction, and fitting it inverted will not seal or flex as intended.
What should be checked while the chamber is apart?
The sealing faces of both housings, the push rod and its plate, the return spring, and the clamp band itself. A new diaphragm will not compensate for a corroded sealing face or a distorted band.
Corrosion or pitting on the flange where the diaphragm bead seats is a common reason a rebuilt chamber leaks despite a new part. Clean sealing faces carefully and assess whether they are still serviceable.
Check the push rod for straightness and its plate for wear where it bears on the diaphragm. A worn or rough plate abrades the new diaphragm from the day it is fitted.
Inspect the clamp band for distortion and corrosion. It carries the clamping load for the whole chamber, and it is not the place to economise.
This is also the moment to consider whether the chamber itself has reached the end of its useful life. If the housings are heavily corroded, replacing the diaphragm alone is postponing the work rather than doing it.
How is it reassembled and tested?
Seat the new diaphragm the correct way round, bring the housings together in the marked orientation, and fit the clamp band to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Then charge the system and verify before the vehicle moves.
Fit the diaphragm with the bead seated evenly all the way round. An unevenly seated bead is the most common cause of a leak on a freshly rebuilt chamber, and it is fully preventable at this stage.
Assemble the housings in the orientation you marked, and tighten the clamp band to the figure given by the vehicle manufacturer. We do not publish a torque figure here, because it is set by the chamber manufacturer and varies — using a general number on a safety-critical clamp is not a shortcut worth taking.
Charge the system, apply and release the brake several times, and check for leaks at the band with the brake held on. Then check push rod travel against the manufacturer’s limit and adjust as required.
Finally, road-test in controlled conditions before the vehicle returns to service, and confirm the vehicle brakes evenly.
Torque figures, push rod travel limits and adjustment procedures come from the vehicle manufacturer’s service documentation. This guide deliberately publishes none of them.
When should this go to a workshop instead?
Whenever a spring brake chamber is involved, whenever the correct tools or documentation are not available, and whenever the result cannot be verified afterwards. Brake work that cannot be checked should not be attempted.
The spring brake case is absolute: that work needs the correct caging equipment and the training to use it, and the consequence of getting it wrong is not a failed repair.
The softer cases matter too. Without the manufacturer’s torque figure and travel limit, a service chamber rebuild cannot be verified as correct — it can only be assumed to be. On a braking system that is not a reasonable position to finish in.
Replacing in axle sets is worth planning for at this point as well: the opposite diaphragm has done the same work for the same time, and the labour is already committed.
